The Human Ecologist, the quarterly publication of the Human Ecology Action League, an organization focused on resolving the health effects of environmental exposure, publishes “Finding the right doctor for you,” an article by Association President and CEO Kimberly McCleary. In it, she offers tips to make the most out of doctor visits. (December 2008)

Woman’s Day publishes “Understanding Chronic Fatigue,” a short but thorough article that includes information about XMRV. (12/03/09)

The November issue of U.S. Pharmacist magazine includes CFS in a discussion of fatigue. It points to CDC information about treatments, noting that “Treatment options for CFS are diverse and of variable use.” (11/19/09)

The Association for Computing Machinery’s journal Queue publishes “Metamorphosis: the Coming Transformation of Translational Systems Biology.” The article notes “In the future computers will mine patient data to deliver faster, cheaper healthcare, but how will we design them to give informative causal explanations? Ideas from philosophy, model checking, and statistical testing can pave the way for the needed translational systems biology.” The authors, including Association-funded researcher Bud Mishra, use CFS as an example of an illness that will benefit from their work: “building a software tool that is primarily focused on understanding disease etiologies; interrelations among various diseases; relations of a disease to polymorphisms, biomarkers, and pathways; and, finally, approaches to use this knowledge to select diagnostics, prognostics, and therapeutics for patients in a personalized manner and with high precision.” (10/12/09)

A story published on the Science Express website of Science magazine outlines the “Detection of an Infectious Retrovirus, XMRV, in Blood Cells of Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” by researchers at the Whittemore-Peterson Institute, the National Cancer Institute and the Cleveland Clinic. They reported that 67 percent of 101 CFS patients tested positive for infection with xenobiotic murine retrovirus (XMRV), a gammaretrovirus associated with a subset of prostate cancer. Only 3.7 percent of 218 healthy subjects tested were positive for the virus. These important results provide evidence of the association of at least a subset of CFS cases with retroviruses, a hypothesis formed in the mid-1980s and pursued by several independent research groups. The findings have generated enormous coverage, with mention in more than 5,400 publications and websites, including: (10/08/09)

In “Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?,” an article about general fatigue, The Tenerife News says that, “A small number of people suffer from prolonged, severe and disabling tiredness for which there is no clear cause. This is sometimes called myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Doctors now recognise that this is an illness although they know less about the causes and treatment than with many other problems.” (Canary Islands) (1/08/09)
