Media: Survey Introduction

Dear Media Professional:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)…

It is estimated to affect as many as 800,000 Americans, but the medical community lacks the knowledge and tools to diagnose it effectively. CFS is characterized by a wide variety of symptoms from impaired memory and concentration to post-exertional malaise, and can be as serious and disabling as other more well known chronic illnesses, including multiple sclerosis, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

These are only some of the findings from a first-ever survey of medical professionals who confront this mysterious, complex illness in the clinic and the lab on a regular basis. The survey reveals a variety of opinions on the causes of CFS, how to diagnose and treat it, and what the medical community still needs to better care for patients.

The CFIDS Association of America, which fielded the survey to over 8,100 medical professionals from a variety of disciplines, is the nation's leading organization working to conquer CFS. Kim Kenney, President and CEO of The CFIDS Association, is available to speak with you about the findings of this survey and the need for further medical education and research.

To schedule an interview, please contact Marcia Harmon at 704-364-0466 or media@cfids.org. For more information about CFS and The CFIDS Association of America, visit the Resources and About Us sections of www.cfids.org.
