News & Notes

There is so much happening this month that we are sending an extra edition of CFIDSLink to keep you up-to-date!

Research

The May 14, 2010 issue of Science includes five articles that relate to the October 8, 2009 report of an association between CFS and XMRV, a human retrovirus, by Lombardi, et al. Our XMRV resource page houses the comprehensive and most up-to-date list of articles, fact sheets, etc.

Advocacy Counts

The federal CFS Advisory Committee met on May 10, 2010. Here's our meeting summary including a list of the recommendations passed by the committee. Several of the recommendations for the committee's charter were adopted from the Association's testimony.

The Association's 6th Annual Virtual Lobby Day is in progress, with four easy-to-use letter templates to reinforce the CFSAC's recommendations, request expanded research from Congress, President Obama and VP Biden, urge members of Congress to attend the May 19 briefing on chronic pain in women, and request media coverage from your local broadcast and print media outlets. Add your voice and messages to the 5,416 already sent.

Treatment Matters

Dr. Charles Lapp of the Hunter-Hopkins Center in Charlotte, NC, is our guest for the next webinar in our 2010 series. He will describe his "Stepwise Approach to Treating CFS & Fibromyalgia." Join us at 12:30 (EDT) on Thursday, May 20 by pre-registering.

News & Notes

The Campaign to End Chronic Pain in Women aims to improve the quality of life for all those living in pain by raising awareness of chronic pain conditions that disproportionately impact women, as well as the neglect, dismissal and discrimination faced by women suffering from chronic pain. Men suffering the double stigma of chronic pain and conditions commonly considered to be women's conditions will be addressed as well in this campaign that launches May 19 on Capitol Hill in cooperation with the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues. Ask the members of Congress who represent you to attend this important event with our quick, easy Action Alert!

A generous donor family made a donation of $10,000 last month, and added a challenge to their gift: if the Association raised $10,000 by May 12, they would donate another $10,000! We are delighted to announce that this mini-campaign was successful, raising $14,039 and securing the match, for a combined total of $34,039. Thank you for your support! Visit our Facebook cause, SolveCFS, to connect and donate.

One of the U.K.'s national daily newspapers, the Guardian, published an exceptional article about CFS/ME on May 13, "The Trouble with M.E.".

There are several education and awareness events scheduled this month around the country and around the world. Check our listing for dates, locations and topics.
